Benefits are worth checking

A number of benefits exist that may help with the extra costs of a health condition or disability, regardless of whether you are also receiving council or NHS-funded care.

Attendance Allowance

Attendance Allowance is a benefit for people over State Pension age who need help with personal care or supervision because of a disability or health condition. It is not means-tested.

Other benefits to check

Depending on your age and circumstances, it may also be worth checking Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Carer's Allowance for anyone caring for you, and Pension Credit.

Getting a benefits check

Age UK, Citizens Advice and some local welfare rights services offer free benefits checks to help identify what you may be entitled to.

Common questions

Will claiming a benefit affect my council care funding?

Benefits and council-funded care are assessed separately, but some benefit income may be taken into account in a financial assessment. Ask your council or a benefits adviser for guidance specific to your situation.
