What direct payments are

Direct payments are money paid to you (or someone acting on your behalf) by the council, instead of the council arranging services directly. You use the money to arrange your own care and support to meet your agreed needs.

What you can use them for

Direct payments must be used to meet the needs set out in your care and support plan — for example, paying a home care provider like Care Angels for agreed visits.

Keeping records

You'll usually need to keep simple records of how the direct payment is spent, and the council may check in periodically as part of your care plan review.

Support with managing direct payments

If managing a direct payment yourself feels daunting, some areas have support services or a trusted person/organisation that can help you manage the payments and paperwork.

Common questions

Can I use a direct payment to pay Care Angels?

Yes, as long as the arrangement is agreed with your council as meeting your care plan, direct payments can be used to pay a provider of your choice.

What if I no longer want a direct payment?

You can ask your council to arrange your care directly instead — talk to your social worker or the council's adult social care team.
