What reablement is
Reablement is short-term, goal-focused support that helps someone regain skills and confidence to do things for themselves again, often after an illness, injury or hospital stay.
How it's different from ongoing care
Rather than carers doing tasks for you, reablement support encourages you to do as much as you safely can yourself, with carers helping you practise and adapt, gradually reducing support as you progress.
Who provides reablement
Reablement is often arranged through the NHS or local council, sometimes free of charge for a limited period, and may also be arranged privately.
What happens afterwards
At the end of a reablement period, your needs are usually reviewed to decide whether ongoing care is needed, and if so, what type and how it will be funded.
Common questions
Is reablement free?
Some reablement support, particularly after a hospital stay, may be provided free of charge for a short period by the NHS or local council. Ask your discharge team or council for details.
