General Advice

Choosing a home care provider

What to look for, and what to ask, when choosing a home care provider.

Check registration and inspection

Home care providers in England are regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Check a provider's current registration and any published inspection reports.

Ask how carers are recruited and trained

Look for providers who carry out enhanced DBS checks, reference checks and structured induction training, with ongoing supervision and development.

Ask about consistency of carers

Continuity matters, particularly for people with dementia or complex needs. Ask how the provider plans rotas to keep familiar faces wherever possible.

Understand costs clearly

A good provider will set out charges clearly in writing before care starts, including how visits are costed and how changes are agreed.

Ask about communication and reviews

Find out how you'll be kept informed, how concerns are raised and resolved, and how often the care plan is reviewed.
