Paying for care: an overview

A short overview of the main ways care can be paid for, with links to our full funding guide.

Self-funding

Many people pay for care privately, particularly if they have savings or assets above the threshold the local council uses, or choose not to apply for council funding.

Local authority funding

Your council can assess your care needs and, separately, your finances, to decide whether they will fund some or all of your care.

NHS funding

People with significant ongoing health needs may be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare, which funds care fully, regardless of income or savings.

Direct payments and personal budgets

If a council agrees to fund your care, you may be able to take this as a personal budget or direct payment, giving you more choice over how and by whom your care is delivered.

Where to go next
