What direct payments are

Direct payments are money paid to you by the council, instead of the council arranging care for you directly, so you can arrange your own care and support.

What they can be used for

Direct payments must be used to meet the needs identified in your care and support plan, such as paying a home care provider for agreed visits.

Managing a direct payment

You'll usually need to keep simple records of how the money is spent. Support is often available locally to help you manage a direct payment if you'd prefer not to do this alone.

Choosing a provider with a direct payment

A direct payment can give you the freedom to choose a provider, such as Care Angels, as long as the arrangement meets your agreed care plan.

Common questions

Can a family member manage a direct payment on my behalf?

In some circumstances yes, with the council's agreement — ask your social worker about arrangements for managing payments on someone's behalf.
